    What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state. Most people readily enter a hypnotic state spontaneously many times, for example when being so engrossed in a book or a tv programme that they don’t hear someone calling their name.

The actual word ‘hypnosis’ is a bit misleading, because in fact it is not a state of sleep rather it is a state of heightened awareness. There are no real feeling of being in hypnosis, though you may feel relaxed, as if you were daydreaming and some people report that time seems to go much faster whist in hypnosis.

Hypnosis can be used within a theraputic setting to help with many problems. In a therapeutic situation hypnosis can be thought of as when the conscious and subconscious mind are focused on the same thought. This means that suggestions are often accepted subconsciously without any conscious objection.

The theraputic uses of hypnosis are wide and varied, however, they can be split into main categories suggestion and analysis. Suggestion therapy is often used for habit breaking and relief of symptoms whereas analytical therapy is used to get to the root of the problem.

    Suggestion Therapy

Suggestion therapy can be used to help with many issues ranging from smoking cessation to confidence building and phobias. During hypnosis the conscious and subconscious mind is in alignment and this enables the client to take onboard the suggestions that are made to them, as long as the suggestions are deemed to be in the best interest of the client. It is not possible to make a person do anything that would go against their moral code or for them to accept a suggestion that would be detrimental to their well being. Suggestion therapy generally takes three to six sessions and will involve the client and therapist discussing, in detail, the outcomes that they are going to work towards. The working sessions may well include some exercises to start the client thinking in a positive manner before the hypnosis and suggestion therapy is delivered. Often the client will be given 'homework' to practice between sessions.

    Analytical Therapy

Hypnosis can be employed in an analytical setting and has been found to have dramatic and profound effects. Hypnoanalysis is often employed to deal with long term problems or behaviour patterns and aims to get to the root cause of the problem. Once the root of the problem has been discovered and the emotions attached to it are dealt with then the symptoms can get substantially better or simply disappear, the resulting change is lasting. Hypnoanalysis works on the theory that the whole of a persons's behaviour is the result of a cause and effect cycle and patterns of behaviour laid down over many years, usually in childhood. If the client is able to revisit the initial sensitizing event and review it with the resources that they possess in the here and now then they are able to release any emotion that is attached to it.

    Smoking Cessation Therapy

If you want to STOP SMOKING then hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool to enable you to reach your goal and become a non smoker.

A study in New Scientist magazine (volume 136 page 6) found that "Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little"

At Chelmsford Hypnotherapy a tailor made smoking cessation package is delivered in a single session lasting between one and a half and two hours. It is based on an award winning smoking cessation system and then modified to suit the individual. There is a high rate of success and clients find that they walk into the consulting room a smoker and leave a non smoker.

The next step on your path to becoming a happy and healthy non smoker is to pick up the phone and arange an appointment.

    Questions

Can I be made to do something against my will?

NO. It is not possible to make someone in hypnosis do anything against their will. Any suggestions that are given to a person in hypnosis will only be acted upon if they are for their good and do not break their moral code.

    Will I go to sleep?

This is one of the major misconceptions about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Far from going to sleep you will be in a heightened state and able to focus all your efforts and attention on the subject in hand.

    Will I remember anything afterwards?

Yes, most people remember the whole session though it is possible that some people remember very little of the working session. Whether you remember it or not effective work can still take place.

    About Me

My fascination with hypnosis and hypnotherapy started in childhood when I began researching self hypnosis. This continued into adulthood, but it was my desire to help people led me to choose a career in nursing. I have spent ten years working in the NHS, most recently as an anaesthetic nurse.

I have carried out extensive training with the Essex Institute of Clinical Hypnosis and am a registered member of the Association For Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (APHP). I follow a strict code of ethics, commit to regular professional supervision, hold a current CRB certificate and am involved in a programme of continuing professional development to ensure my practice remains current.

I have spent the most of my life in Chelmsford, though have been fortunate enough to spend some time broadening my horizens by travelling around South East Asia and Central America. I am married and my wife and I have been blessed with a beautiful daughter.
